Moving is challenging on a good day but when you throw in kids and pets, it’s downright overwhelming! With a little planning and the tips from the housing experts at HGTV you’ll have everyone running in the sprinkler and playing in the backyard before you know it!
CREATE GREAT EXPECTATIONS: HGTV suggests having the kids create a Pinterest page just for the move. They can include things like new paint colors for their room, room decorating ideas, and fun things to do in their new community. Be sure to check out the local schools and recreational opportunities for team sports and more. For the pets, be prepared in your new home with pheromone scent diffusers that you can plug in at the new location. PetComfortZone.com recommends Feliway for cats and DAP for dogs. These diffusers will emit a calming animal pheromone to help your furry one feel more secure in their surroundings.
PACK TO UNPACK: Have every family member pack their essentials box, this goes for pets as well. The essentials boxes will travel with you and should have everything needed for the first night and the next morning. For the two-legged family members, you’ll want to remember to include snacks and drinks, pillows, favorite toy or book, and morning necessities like coffeemaker, coffee, etc. For the fur babies, don’t forget the leash, bed, loved toy, treats and food, litter and box, and their bowls for food and water. The goal is to make moving into your home more fun and more comfortable for the family.
CHECK OUT THE NEW DIGS WITH THE ENTIRE PACK: If you live close by to your new home, take the entire pack to check out the new digs. If you’re building a new home in the greater Dayton area, you can obviously take the kids and the dogs to the job site as long as you follow your home builder’s rules for visiting a construction site. Make the move more fun by taking a walk around the new neighborhood and checking out local attractions including parks, dog parks, and schools. If you are moving with a kitty, pet experts recommend bringing over the litter box and a used shirt or cushion a few days earlier so your new home will have familiar smells. Just remember that you may want to limit your pet’s access to your home for a few days and particularly while moving in.
UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS: We all know to update addresses for the utility companies for transferring power, but don’t forget to update your mailing address for reoccurring bills. Moving is stressful for your pets. In the event your pet gets scared of just wonders off, be sure to have your contact information updated on microchips and physical tags. If your pet isn’t microchipped, consider having this done (before moving) with your new contact information. Microchipping can be done at your local vet or shelter.
GIVE’EM A BREAK: Give the littles (we’re including your pets) a break from the stress by sending them off to a day camp or grandma’s for a one to two-day vacation to help shield them from moving chaos.
